Ham and Cheese Monte Cristo Sandwiches

These Ham and Cheese Monte Cristo Sandwiches are a beloved treat in our home, and for good reason. They’re so delicious that I find myself cooking them four times a week! The combination of gooey melted cheese, savory ham, and crispy golden bread creates a mouthwatering experience that’s hard to resist. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, or even a comforting dinner, this recipe brings together simple ingredients to make an extraordinary sandwich.

Ingredients:
12 slices of bread (white bread or challah work well)
12 slices of cheese (Swiss cheese, cheddar, or mozzarella are good choices)
6 slices of ham
2 eggs
100 ml of milk
Pinch of salt
Cooking oil (for frying)

Instructions:
1. Prepare the Filling:
Assemble the Sandwiches: Lay out 6 slices of bread. On each slice, place a slice of ham and a slice of cheese. Top with another slice of bread to form a sandwich. Repeat this process with the remaining bread, ham, and cheese to make a total of 6 sandwiches.

2. Make the Egg Batter:
Mix Ingredients: In a shallow bowl, whisk together 2 eggs, 100 ml of milk, and a pinch of salt until well combined. This mixture will help create a deliciously crispy coating for the sandwiches.

3. Heat the Oil:
Prepare the Skillet: In a large skillet or frying pan, heat enough cooking oil over medium heat to come about halfway up the sides of the sandwiches. This allows for even frying and a crispy texture.

4. Dip and Fry:
Coat the Sandwiches: Dredge each sandwich in the egg batter, making sure to coat both sides evenly. This will give the sandwiches a flavorful, crispy exterior.
Fry to Perfection: Carefully place the coated sandwiches in the hot oil. Fry each side for 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Make sure to monitor the heat to avoid burning.

5. Drain and Serve:
Drain Excess Oil: Remove the sandwiches from the pan and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate to remove any excess oil.
Cut and Serve: Cut each sandwich in half diagonally and serve immediately for the best taste and texture.

Tips
Bread Choice: White bread or challah are ideal as they hold their shape well during frying. However, feel free to use any type of bread you prefer.
